Convento de Santo António dos Capuchos - Castelo Branco
Convento de Santo António dos Capuchos - Castelo Branco
Monuments
This convent was built in 1562 by the Mendicant Friars of St. Francis, on the orders of the Commendator of the Order of Christ, Fernando de Menezes. In 1779, queen Maria I established a school here given into the care of Brother José de Dominguiso and funded by the Municipality. After 1834, it became a barracks and a military hospital. It is currently home to the Castelo Branco Infantry Regiment.
The current building dates to the 18th century, taking a Mannerist style. From the gallery, there´s a good vantage point for the blue and white tile panels, without much else of decorative note inside.
