Castelo de Chaves

Castelo de Chaves

Monuments

Chaves Castle was built in the 9th century by King Afonso III of León, to reinforce the settlement defences during the Christian Reconquest. Throughout the centuries, it underwent several reconstructions, mainly with the upgrading of Chaves to a town, when King Afonso III of Portugal granted it a charter in 1258, thus consolidating its strategic importance in the region.

From this reconstruction, the Keep stands out as the most significant feature of the castle that remains to this day. It measures 28 metres in height, has battlements and crenels on the rooftop, and was built in the 13th century.

Outside, in the garden bordered by some remaining walls, it is possible to enjoy a panoramic view over the Chaves valley and observe some of the pieces from the Flavian Region Museum on display here.
