Sanctuary of Nosso Senhor Jesus da Piedade
This sanctuary was built by Father Manuel Antunes, as a result of his devotion to Christ's Passion and in gratitude for having been saved from death after a dangerous fall. In 1736 the priest invoked the aid of the raised cross in the site where a labourer had died. The sanctuary includes a Casa dos Milagres containing ex-votos. The church includes a rich collection of marble statues and paintings by Volkernar Machado.
The main Pilgrimage is held from September 20 to 26, and the Fair of São Mateus and the Festivities of the City of Elvas are held on the same date. Worship of Senhor Jesus da Piedade is the point of spiritual convergence between the peoples of the Alentejo region and Spain.
