Capela de Santa Cruz ou Capela do Calvário - Covilhã
Monuments
This Gothic chapel was built in the 15th century by Prince Henry the Navigator, Lord of Covilhã. In the 16th century, Dom Luís, the son of King Dom Manuel I and Lord of Covilhã, commissioned some restoration work, and enriched the chapel's treasury with a silver monstrance containing a relic from the Holy Cross. The relic is now in the Parish Church of Santa Maria.
The interesting part of the chapel's external structure is the narthex, a porch that extends the entrance to the building. Inside, it is worth noting the wood-panelled ceiling with representations of the instruments of Christ's Passion, and in the chancel the sculpture of Christ Crucified and the gilt carving work.
