Horta Museum
Housed in the former Jesuits’ College, one of Faial’s most important buildings, Horta Museum exhibits a heterogeneous collection of significant pieces from the island’s cultural heritage, covering a broad period of history.
Amongst the highlights are the ethnographical sections and the collection of paintings from the 16th to the 20th century, with works by António Dacosta, Manuel Lapa, Mário Cesariny and Sousa Pinto, amongst others. At the permanent exhibition, we can admire a unique collection of pieces carved from the white pith of fig-trees by the artist Euclides Rosa, reminding us of an art that has been practised on the island of Faial since the mid-19th century.
Horta Museum also has an annex at the Capelinhos volcano.
