Walls and Turrets in Lagos
Lagos's city walls, built in the reigns of D. Manuel I, D. João III and Filipe I completely surrounded the city in order to defend it from pirates and hostile fleets. The walls were subject to restoration works in 1960 at the time of the Henriquina commemorations.
Given their length and state of conservation, the city’s walls are some of the most important in the Algarve. Key aspects include the Bulwarks and Gates (Santa Maria, Praça de Armas, Conceição, Alcaria or Freiras, Porta dos Quartos, Santo Amaro or Paiol, São Francisco and the Tower of Trem) that offer fine perspectives over the city.
