Church of Santa Bárbara
Built in the 18th century, the Church of Santa Bárbara is a fine example of Joanine baroque style and is one of the island's most ornate churches.
The dark red masonry work of the façade includes a niche containing a statue of the patron saint. Key features of the interior include the Alfarge ceiling made of local cedarwood, including representations of St George and the Holy Spirit in the central medallions, the azulejo-tile panels featuring scenes from the life of Santa Bárbara and the altarpieces dedicated to Santo Inácio and São Francisco Xavier.
