Sanctuary of Senhor Jesus do Bonfim
On the way out of Portalegre, on the road to Castelo de Vide and Marvão, there is the Sanctuary of Lord Jesus of Bonfim, also known as the Church of Bonfim. Its construction was ordered in 1720 by bishop Álvaro Pires de Castro Noronha. Throughout the 18th century, it was an important place of pilgrimage as can be seen from the outhouses built to shelter pilgrims. The pilgrimage is held on the last Sunday in September.
There is a simple Baroque exterior. On the inside, the finishings are harmonious including gold-leafed carvings, polychromatic stucco, tiles and a series of rococo canvases depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ
