Castelo de Penamacor
Monuments
Visit the frontier castle of Penamacor, and meet one of the oldest guardians in Portugal's history.
Situated on a fortified summit, between the Rivers Ceife and Taliscas, the 573 metre castle dominates the landscape. Penamacor dates back to the building of the castle in 1189, when the region was donated to the Master of the Order of the Temple, D. Gualdim Pais.
The site consists of a wall that connects the clocktower, the town hall and an isolated watchtower on another rocky hill. The dungeon, the city wall and a second circular wall were built later on as well as the barbican. The town hall was built over the entrance gate in 1568.
On the northern side, you will see a bastion with sloping ramparts connecting two embrasures.
