Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Atalaia
A sanctuary with considerable tradition. In former times, the inhabitants of Lisbon on the Sunday of the Holy Trinity, organized a pilgrimage in order to fulfil a promise made in 1507, when a plague decimated the capital's population.
A small church was rebuilt in the eighteenth century, and includes blue and white azulejo tiles featuring images of scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary.
Many pilgrimages are held, especially in summer, the most important of which is the Feast of the Ascension held on the last Sunday in August.
