Núcleo de Arte Contemporânea - Museu Municipal de Tomar
Museums and Palaces
Created in 2004, through a donation by Professor José-Augusto França, this centre consists of paintings, sculptures, drawings and photographs, covering a chronological arc beginning in 1932. Works by Mário Eloy, Júlio and Almada Negreiros stand out, marking the modernism of the second quarter of the 20th century.
Surrealism also has a place with a significant number of works produced by the Lisbon Surrealist Group. Abstractionism and new-figuration are also represented with works by Fernando Lanhas and João Cutileiro, among others. Completing the collection is a varied production that marks the end of the 20th century to the present day.
With a collection of over 200 works of contemporary Portuguese art located in the heart of Tomar's Historic Centre, the Nucleus of Contemporary Art house is located where the backyard of the residence of a prior of the Convent of Christ used to be. The building existing today was built for housing in the early 20th century, and refurbished in a project offered by the architect Jorge Mascarenhas.
A work by Michelangelo, created for the Laurentian Library, in Florence in Italy, encourages the ascent to the second floor, through the stairs that, seen from above, strangely lengthen. Outside, one can observe two large-scale works, “Árvore Azul” ("Blue Tree") by José de Guimarães and “Modulação Luminosa X” ("Luminous Modulation X") by Eduardo Nery, offered by the artists and created specifically for the Museum.
