Paiva Walkways (Passadiços do Paiva)
The Paiva Walkways are the best way to explore the Paiva River. Between the beaches of Areinho and Espiunca, where the entrances are located, the walkways are a total of 8 kms long, along the rocky and steep left bank.
They are an excellent way to walk along the river, in an authentic natural sanctuary, home to many species, some of them endangered, and you can take breaks to enjoy the landscape and the local biodiversity. On the way, it is worth noticing some geological monuments: the Paiva Gorge (Garganta do Paiva), the Aguieiras Waterfall (Cascata das Aguieiras), the Vau River Beach, Gola do Salto and the Espiunca Fault (Falha de Espiunca). On average, it takes about three hours to complete the path.
The entrances are about half an hour's drive from Arouca and tickets must be purchased in advance, which can be done at www.passadicosdopaiva.pt. The path can be done independently or with a guided tour, using one of the operators who are partners in the project run by the City Council of Arouca.
They are one of the points of interest of the Arouca Geopark, along with the Arouca 516 suspension bridge, the Trilobite Museum (Museu dos Trilobites), more than 40 geosites and the city of Arouca, where you can visit the St. Mary’s Monastery (Mosteiro de Santa Maria).
