Portugal by train
Take the train and discover Portugal at your own pace. Rocked by the rhythm, admire dream landscapes from your window, with your family, as a couple or by yourself. In addition to regular trips, there are various programmes to get to know Portugal by train and, among so many options, you're sure to find something you like.
Have you ever imagined yourself riding on a steam train that is over a century old? And what if you add a landscape as beautiful as the Douro River valley? All this is possible on the Historic Douro train, which, during the months of June to October, takes you on a real journey back in time by the river, between Régua and Tua, marked by the beauty of the landscape classified by UNESCO as World Heritage. If you like this suggestion, you can take another trip, but this time aboard the Historic Vouga Train, which takes you from Aveiro to Macinhata do Vouga. After visiting the Macinhata do Vouga Railway Museum (Museu Ferroviário de Macinhata do Vouga), on the return trip you can visit the historical centre of Águeda.
At all times of the year there is always a festival happening in Portugal. Did you know that you can go to some of them by train? There are various programmes that take you to the places where the festivals take place, prepared with all the details so that you can participate and make the most of these experiences. For example, the Almond Tree Route, which takes place in February/March, a time when the almond trees are in bloom and cover the fields in white. The tour takes you to the stunning landscapes of the Alto Douro, with a visit to the Côa Museum (Museu do Côa), articulating with bus routes so you don't miss anything of this stunning spectacle.
During the Cherry Festivals in May/June, embark on the Fundão Cherry Route and go by train to the foot of the Serra da Gardunha in central Portugal, to discover the charms of the Beira Baixa Line and take part in the picking of this fruit, taste the local gastronomy or visit historic locations.
In September, it's the grape harvests that mark the calendar in the Douro Wine Region. The train takes you to Régua and then a programme awaits you that includes visits to the wineries and estates where wine is produced, tastings and even participation in the "lagaradas" - the treading of the grapes in the Douro Wine Region, where there's plenty of socialising and partying while you take part in the grape harvest.
But the suggestions do not stop there... there are also special programmes for music festivals, for the popular saints festivities in Lisbon and Porto, for Festival of Our Lady of the Agony (Romaria da Senhora da Agonia) in Viana do Castelo, or for the Bairrada Route in central Portugal, among many others.
For young people aged 12 to 30 years old inclusive, there is the Intra_Rail card, to get to know Portugal, with guaranteed accommodation at Youth Inns (Pousadas de Juventude); or the Portugal Rail Pass, an easy way to get to know the country from north to south by train, for 3 or 7 days, for non residents in Portugal.
