South and Southeast Station (Estação Sul e Sueste) - Lisbon

Other

The South and Southeast Station (Estação Sul e Sueste) is a river station located in Terreiro do Paço, Lisbon, where you can catch the boats that make sightseeing tours on the Tagus. Next to Doca da Marinha, it is a point with history by the Tagus, inaugurated in 1932, which has already undergone several renovations; the last one was held in May 2021.

The beginning of its construction dates back to 1929 and the original design was by Cotinelli Telmo, having started out as the heart of the Portuguese capital's river supply. After decades without use, the rehabilitation of the station began in 2019 under an exterior architecture project by Ana Costa, Cotinelli Telmo's granddaughter, and Bruno Soares, on the interior, who had also given a new look to Praça do Comércio. The aim was to rehabilitate the South and Southeast Station (Estação Sul e Sueste) with loyalty to its original appearance.

The marble floor, the tiles, the Art Deco inspiration and the big clock were kept; the interior is now minimalist in style. Inside the station, you can find the Tagus Centre (Centro Tejo), an interactive space that explores the river and its shared history between Lisbon residents and inhabitants of the south bank; as well as a shop.

In turn, Doca da Marinha was renovated with a lawn, kiosks and esplanades, as well as a space that houses an artistic installation by Julião Sarmento.
