Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Assunção da Boa Nova
The Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Assunção da Boa Nova is a Gothic style fortress-church - one of the few examples of such constructions in Portugal.
It was commissioned in the 14th century by Queen D. Maria, wife of Afonso XI of Castille and daughter of the Portuguese king D. Afonso IV, in fulfilment of a promise made in the event of Portuguese victory against the Moors in the Battle of Salado. It is classified as a National Monument.
The pilgrimage associated to the Sanctuary, that takes place on Easter Sunday and Monday is the oldest in the Alentejo region and is related to the "Songs of Santa Maria" of Afonso X.
