Museums and Palaces

The Dr. Joaquim Manso Ethnographic and Archaeological Museum, also known as the Museum of Nazaré, was opened to the public in 1976. It is lodged in the early 20th-century house that served as the summer residence of Dr. Joaquim Manso, a writer and journalist, and the founder of the daily newspaper, the "Diário de Lisboa". The house was donated to the state in 1968 by the local benefactor Amadeu Gaudêncio to serve as a museum.

As a regional-based museum, its collection documents the history of the region and the cultural identity of the people of Nazaré. Recently the museum’s remit was extended to include maritime ethnography, highlighting local fishing traditions with an exhibition of different types of traditional boats and the arts of fishing.

The collection also includes archaeological finds, records and traditional costumes, as well as sculptures and paintings.
