Designed by reputable architect José Luiz Monteiro and erected in the last decades of the 19th century, surrounded by a lavish and extensive Botanical Park with the signature of famous landscapist François Nogré, the building constitutes a unique expression of Portuguese Romantic architecture, additionally embellished with the works of celebrated artists such as Luigi Manini, Leandro de Souza Braga and Paul Baudry.
