Events

The exhibition "The Castle Revolt (1928)" is part of the Official Commemorations of the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April, and is on display at the Castle of São Jorge.

On July 20, 1928, the military of the 7th Hunters battalion, quartered in the Castle of São Jorge, began a military and civil uprising against the Military Dictatorship. This revolutionary movement became known as the Revolt (or Revolution) of the Castle, and was one of the most expressive actions carried out by the active bodies of resistance against the dictatorial system. The revolt was ultimately unsuccessful, and ended with serious consequences for its promoters. Despite this, the importance of this movement as a demonstration of popular discontent is recognized.
