Will Oldham, a singular figure in American roots music, took on the alter ego Bonnie 'Prince' Billy at the end of the 1990s, an identity that combines cowboy spirit with a punk attitude. He became widely recognized with I See a Darkness (1999), an album that won over Johnny Cash, leading him to record the song of the same name and invite Oldham to Los Angeles for a duet. This experience also led to a friendship with producer David "Ferg" Ferguson. In 2025, Bonnie presents The Purple Bird, her thirtieth album, recorded in Nashville and critically acclaimed, which precedes a new European tour.
